This is the first time the procedure had been performed successfully. The team of doctors at University Hospital Okayama, western Japan, said the findings could someday provide an alternative to heart transplantation.

The doctor told reporters on Tuesday they have expanded stem-cell from a female infant aged one year who was born with left ventricular heart of smallness. Ventricle is the ventricle that pumps blood to the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body.

The doctors had been multiplying cells for several days, and then transplanting it on the baby's heart.

They say the size of her baby's heart muscle has grown 10 percent, and that the amount of blood pumped has increased with the same number.
