Libya Government troops pound Misrata , 22 Killed

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi attacked rebel-held town of Misrata on Friday, killing at least 22 people and wounding dozens more, according to a doctor.

Witnesses said troops loyal to Mr Gaddafi deploying tanks, artillery and rockets in an attempt to seize the important city, one of several rebel foothold in western Libya.

Meanwhile, NATO's air attacks caused smoke in the capital Tripoli, 200 miles to the west, the Western allies in the continuing effort to force Gaddafi down from power.

There is no indication Gaddafi is ready to end his rule, but Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyp Erdogan said his government has offered to guarantee Gaddafi if he was willing to leave the country.

He did not explain the nature of that guarantee. But he said Turkey would help Gaddafi to go to a place he liked. Erdogan says he is still awaiting answers from Tripoli.

Meanwhile, new air attacks rocked NATO allegedly committed while Libyan capital of Norway announced it would end the commitment of its air support to NATO missions.

Norway's defense ministry on Friday said it would withdraw its combat jet to six of the NATO-led operation on 1 August.

Officials at NATO mission on Friday denied reports that the Libyan government's pro-Gaddafi forces had shot down NATO helicopter in the city Zlitan, western Libya.
